feng shui, nhl style: coaches and players weigh in on the atmosphere of a locker-room - retractable wall dividers
When Guy Boucher was hired as head coach of Senator Ottawa, he did not want to leave any chance.
While systems, line-ups, and engagement with his players will be one of the obvious keys to success, he also looked at the locker room --
The setting of the room was focused on getting more from his team.
"I like Intangible assets very much, because Intangible assets are the reason why you win or lose," Boucher said . " Last spring, he led Ottawa to the Stanley Cup final in his first year of coaching.
"Relationship, chemistry and leadership --
This is the basis for my decision.
"Boucher moved some players in the locker room, and when assigning booths, age, background, language, location and personality were all taken into account.
"I try to tilt the room as much as possible to push for the best possible relationship, which in turn will help us to succeed," Boucher continued . ".
"It took me a long time to figure out what I wanted.
"Different teams have different approaches, but each dressing room has different ideas --
The room, from who sits where to what information is covered on the wall.
In Vancouver, canuck's rooms are on one side of a busy corridor, while the gym and office are on the other.
Rookie coach Travis Green installed retractable partitions inside Rogers Arena this summer, hoping to provide more privacy for players, in the past, on the way to a meeting or exercise, they had to go through members of the media or anyone else in the hallway.
"I asked and wanted a lot of attention to the details," Green said . " He played 14 seasons in NHL.
"As a player, it may sound silly if there are other distractions around you and you are watching the video, but sometimes you just don't focus.
"These small details are important.
"Green made a more subtle change inside the main locker --
There are photos of great men of the past in the room, such as Trevor Linden, Pavel bull, Stan smill and Kirk McLean, now in addition to "preparation" and "accountability"
But unlike Boucher, the position of the player's seat is rearranged by Green.
"I won't come in and start pushing men in the room," said Green . ".
"There is a good line between coach and excessive coach.
"In Calgary, head coach Glenn guluzan said he left most of the time to the equipment manager of the flame, but added that it was important for young players to find their place.
"It's good to have them sit by the veterans," guluzan said . ".
"They can learn a little through penetration.
Canadian striker Daniel Sedin said that when he first entered the league with twin brother Henrik, it was a big advantage to be placed next to Swedish compatriot Marcus nasronde.
"It's important," recalls Daniel Sedin . "
"A lot of problems, a lot of language problems.
"When a young man sits next to an older person, he can learn a lot.
"The player's position may also be related to expectations --
Even if they are new to the team.
Montreal Canadians bought flashy forward Jonathan dololin off-site.
During the season, he was immediately placed next to another captain, Brendan Gallagher, with two more places to go before captain Max pasciretoti.
"I 've learned something from year to year, and it's all about good leaders and people in this role," Gallagher said . " A few years ago, he was moved from the edge of the port room to a more prominent place.
"There are things you don't think of in your first year that you will become more aware of in the future.
"The player's place can also be eyes --
Opened for different reasons
In the rookie season of The New York Rangers, Canada's defender Michael Del Zotto sits next to Sean Avery, the bad boy in the front NHL, and may save him from some of his teammates.
"Every day is fun.
"You don't know what you're going to get," Del Zotto said . ".
"Very interesting.
It's good to be with him because you're safe.
"Teams usually set up strikers on one side of the locker room --
The room and the defender are on the other side.
"It's big for me, so I can find the right person when I talk to them," said Winnipeg Jet chief coach Paul Morris . ".
"I want my captain to be in the same place in the room, in the middle.
"If there is an old man who has some kind of superstition about that booth, I will leave him there.
But he added that there is always a balance in finding the right people.
"Some people speak, some don't," Morris said . ".
"Sometimes you need a talker next to a quiet person (and)
Sometimes it's the worst thing you can do.
"I try to take care of their personality a little bit.
