If the walls talk
When I noticed a brief newspaper announcing the former residence of Ben Margolis, I thought of it, he was a lawyer, on behalf of the oppressed workers, the besieged Red Army was sold.
Designed by Gregory Ain at the beginning of 1950, the hillside Los feizz House, Pierre koenich increased by 21 century and sold for less than $2 million.
Even in the current slow market, the House of Margolis built by Ain may be sold: modern buildings in the middle of the century are in demand.
However, it is unlikely that buyers will understand the ideas that arise during their creation.
Margolis may be best known for his defense of Hollywood 10, where a group of writers called him before the UN House committee.
Because of their relationship with left-wing groups, the activities of the United States.
"Unfriendly" witnesses refused to answer questions about their political beliefs and associations and were convicted of contempt for Congress.
But they are gambling and the Supreme Court will overturn their convictions on the grounds that the Commission has violated their 1st Amendment rights. They bet wrong.
Margolis lost, the Supreme Court accepted the case shortly after the death of the two most liberal members, but refused to hear the appeal.
However, Margolis succeeded in his appeal on behalf of 22 Mexican-American defendants in the 1942 Sleepy murder.
The judge refused to allow these persons to speak to their lawyers during the trial, and Margolis used to frequently overturn their convictions, thus establishing the right of the accused to obtain a lawyer in a criminal trial.
Ten years later, Margolis persuaded a conservative Supreme Court.
The openly proclaimed communists he defended at the time were ridiculously high.
He has prevented Harry Bridges, a great 1930 dock worker, from being deported to his native Australia, and he has prevented David Xuan, a modern architect, from being sent back to South Korea.
Later in his career, he directed the lawsuit, forcing banks to take some financial responsibility for slum owners they lent millions of dollars.
In short, Margolis is a strong supporter of the losers.
Before he was on the House committee
At an event in the US, he growled that he would "fall into hell" before they get any information about my clients from me ". " He meant it.
All of this gives us an idea of why ain became the natural architect of Margolis when he decided to build a house.
As radical as Margolis, Ain believes that modern buildings can and should provide affordable housing (
Urgent demand in post-war years)
This has expanded its residents, rather than being restricted.
Throughout the 1940 s, he drafted the plan, "improving and improving lowcost house.
"Most of the housing he planned was never built because the bank felt uncomfortable with the collective ownership he proposed.
Fortunately, some of the houses he plans to build, including the Avenel co-op housing project of 10 almost identical three groups --
Along the slopes of Silver Lake.
Commissioned by 10 left
At least four people have been blacklisted or questioned by the United Nations House committee.
The design of the project was built in 1947 and is known as the "model of effective use of limited space for low space design"
Cost of urban housing.
"He took advantage of movable walls and sliding patio doors to gain a smooth, flexible and shared space from tiny footprints.
In his best work, Ain was able to free even the smallest room, filled with light, and easy access to the outdoors.
He used the public space as the axis of the whole house, removing the camouflage and form of the traditional way of life.
Like his modernist partners, Ain naively believes that his designs can change human greed --
Greedy, selfish, free-
Become an active steward of public welfare.
Like many people represented by Margolis, Ain's radical views cost him professionally.
Margolis hired the architect during the climax of the national political persecution of communists and other unpopular people, an act of loyalty and friendship, when not everyone was willing to hire one
But without radical ideas
No customers like Margolis.
Today, houses without modernism can be collected as status symbols, even holy objects in the forgotten crusades.
